What Is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that uses a state of focused relaxation and heightened awareness to help clients access and work with the subconscious mind. In this relaxed state, the mind becomes more open to exploring patterns of thought, feeling, and behaviour that may be difficult to reach through conventional talk therapy alone.
It is commonly sought for anxiety, phobias, trauma, habit change, sleep difficulties, and chronic stress. Hypnotherapy can also support personal development and behavioural shifts where conscious effort alone has not been sufficient.
Contrary to common misconceptions, hypnotherapy does not involve loss of control or unconsciousness. Clients remain aware and in control throughout the session. The hypnotic state is similar to the focused absorption of deep meditation or being completely engaged in a book or film.
Hypnotherapy at Whole Self Wellness
At Whole Self Wellness, hypnotherapy is offered by Alanna Jones, MSW, RSW, as part of her integrative approach to psychotherapy. Alanna draws on hypnotherapy alongside her training in EMDR, DBT, Narrative Therapy, the Gottman Method, Yoga, Dance, and Meditation to tailor each session to the individual client's needs and goals.
Her practice is grounded in a trauma-informed, body-positive framework that recognizes the connection between mind, body, and behaviour. Hypnotherapy is used as a complement to other therapeutic modalities when it is clinically appropriate, offering an additional pathway to the subconscious patterns that underlie a client's presenting concerns.
Whole Self Wellness is an explicitly LGBTQIA2S+, ENM, and kink-friendly practice.

What Hypnotherapy Can Support
Anxiety and phobias
Hypnotherapy can support clients in accessing and reframing the subconscious associations driving anxious responses, including specific phobias, generalized anxiety, and panic.
Trauma and PTSD
Used alongside EMDR and other trauma-informed approaches, hypnotherapy can help clients work with traumatic memory and its physiological imprints in a controlled and supported way.
Habit and behaviour change
For clients seeking to shift entrenched patterns such as sleep difficulties, chronic stress responses, or other behavioural concerns, hypnotherapy offers a route to the subconscious drivers that conscious effort alone may not reach.
